Head Style Options
Pan head machine screws feature a low profile domed head with a flat bearing surface underneath. This style provides good clamping force and is commonly used in electronics and appliance assembly.
Flat head machine screws have an 82 degree countersunk cone shape. When installed properly the head sits flush with or slightly below the material surface, creating a smooth finish without protruding parts.
Hex socket head machine screws, also known as socket cap screws, feature a cylindrical head with a hexagonal recess. This design allows for high torque tightening using an Allen key or hex driver, making them ideal for precision machinery applications.
Fillister head screws have a higher head profile than pan heads, providing deeper drive engagement. Cheese head screws offer a cylindrical shape similar to pan head but with straight vertical sides.

Drive Types
Phillips drive features a cross shaped recess that provides good centering and reduces cam out. It is compatible with common screwdrivers found in most shops and assembly lines.
Slotted drive is the traditional straight line design. While simple and widely available, it requires careful alignment during installation.
Hex socket drive offers excellent torque transmission without cam out. The hexagonal recess provides six driving points for even force distribution, ideal for high torque applications.
Material Selection
Stainless steel machine screws provide excellent corrosion resistance for outdoor and marine environments. Grade 304 offers good all around performance while grade 316 provides enhanced resistance to salt water and chemicals.
Brass machine screws are corrosion resistant, non magnetic, and have an attractive gold like appearance. They are commonly used for electrical components, switch plates, and decorative applications.
Carbon steel machine screws offer high strength at a cost effective price point. Various surface finishes are available including zinc plating for mild corrosion resistance and black oxide for reduced glare.
