Shoulder screws, also known as shoulder bolts or stripper bolts, are precision fasteners with three distinct sections: a head, a smooth precision ground shoulder, and a threaded end. The shoulder acts as a rotating shaft or precision spacer while the thread provides secure mounting.
How They Work
The shoulder is ground to a precise diameter with tight tolerance. This smooth surface allows bearings, bushings, gears, and pulleys to rotate freely. The threaded end screws into a tapped hole or nut to hold the assembly in place. The head provides a driving surface and controls how far the shoulder inserts into the mating part.
Head Styles
Socket head shoulder screws have a hex drive for high torque tightening. Good for tight spaces where a wrench cannot fit.
Hex head shoulder screws work with standard wrenches or sockets. Good for larger sizes and higher torque applications.
Flat head shoulder screws sit flush with the surface. Good for countersunk applications where a smooth finish is needed.
Headless shoulder screws have no head. The entire screw is shoulder and thread. Good for applications where both ends need to be flush.
