Machine screws are precision fasteners with threads that run the entire length of the shank. They are designed to be used with pre tapped holes or nuts. Unlike wood screws or self tapping screws, machine screws do not cut their own thread. They require a tapped hole or a nut to create a secure joint. This design provides consistent clamping force and allows for easy disassembly when needed.
Fully Threaded Design The thread on a machine screw is uniform from just under the head all the way to the tip. This full thread design allows the screw to engage with nuts or tapped holes at any point along its length. This makes machine screws versatile for different material thicknesses and assembly configurations.
Head Styles
Phillips pan head machine screws have a flat top with rounded sides that protrude above the surface. They provide a wide bearing surface for clamping and work with standard cross tip screwdrivers.
Flat head machine screws feature an 82 degree countersunk cone shape. When installed properly the head sits flush with or slightly below the material surface creating a smooth finish without protruding parts.
Hex head machine screws work with wrenches or sockets and are good for higher torque applications where a screwdriver might not provide enough tightening force.
Fillister head machine screws have a higher head profile than pan heads providing deeper drive engagement.
Round head machine screws have a domed top and are commonly used for general assembly where a low profile is not required.
Materials Stainless steel machine screws offer good corrosion resistance for outdoor and wet areas. Brass machine screws are corrosion resistant and non magnetic with a decorative finish good for electronics and fixtures. Steel machine screws with zinc plating provide good strength at a cost effective price point. Aluminium machine screws are lightweight and non magnetic.
