Self tapping screws create their own threads during installation. No pre-tapping needed. Available in flat, wafer, pan, hex, countersunk, and truss heads. Fine thread for thin metal. Coarse thread for wood. Thread forming for plastic. Materials include stainless steel, brass, galvanized steel, and aluminium. Metric M2 to M6. Grades 4.8 to 12.9.

    You want a screw that sits flush. Nothing sticking out to catch clothing or scratch surfaces. Flat head with coarse thread and zinc plating. The coarse thread bites fast into wood. The flat head sinks below the surface. Countersunk gives you an even cleaner finish.

    Do I need to drill a pilot hole?

    Yes for metal, plastic, and hardwood. The hole should be slightly smaller than the screw. For softwood, you can sometimes skip this step.

    Which head gives me the strongest hold?

    Hex head lets you apply the most torque. That gives you the strongest clamping force. Use a wrench or socket driver.

    What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

    304 is good for general outdoor use. 316 adds extra protection against salt water and chemicals. Choose 316 for coastal areas or marine applications.

    Can I use self tapping screws in plastic without cracking?

    Yes. Choose thread forming screws with a wafer head. The head spreads pressure. The threads form without cutting. No stress cracks.

    What thread type works best for thin metal?

    Fine thread. More threads per inch means better holding power in thin gauge material.
